History of New Town
Despite to its name New Town was established in 1408. The main reason to establish a New Town so close to Warsaw was the fact that small Warsaw surrounded by walls was too crowded.
New Town and Warsaw are connected since 1791. The part behind the Franciscans’ church (our apartment is placed in there) was a favourite place of Polish gentlefolks to have duels in XVII and XVIII’th century. Before the war New Town district was a colorful part of Warsaw, with many Poles and Jews living together. Freta Street was accommodated mostly by Polish people. Sapieżyńska, Franciszkańska, Ciasna Streets were mostly Jewish.During WWII first, biggest ghetto was settled until Freta street. Close to the gate, where Chopin Apartment Warsaw is situated, you can find marks of walls of Ghetto.
